File Systems
What is a File System?
A file system is just as it's name implies, a system for the storage and retrieval of files and folders within the storage medium. This would be very similar to the Dewey Decimal system at the local library. The file system catalogue contains information about any given file or folder, including the name, file size, access permissions, location on the logical storage medium and a file listing in the case of a folder or directory. Different filesystems will have different benefits and should be chosen based on what the requirements of the system that is accessing the file system will be used for. For example you would want to use a fast file system on a server that is a heavily accessed database server.
