An IDS is different from a Firewall in that it offers insight into where attacks are taking place and allows you to fix the problem. A Firewall is meant to filter traffic, but will not look inside the data packets going in or out. IDS technologies are usually divided into Network Intrusion Detection Systems (NIDS) and Host Intrusion Detection Systems (HIDS).
