Storage System Services - iSCSI SAN / NAS

iSCSI or Internet Small Computer System Interfaceis a popular Storage Area Network (SAN) protocol used by businesses for remote access mechanisms, very similar to those that power the Internet. Using iSCSI as a storage device ensures that the data kept there can be securely accessible away from the original device host. With the increase in business travel and work away from the office, this storage system in becoming increasingly relevant. Remote access is also just as fast as a physical connection, offering an efficient and appropriate system for many organizations today. ISCSI, unlike fibre channels, can be deployed over long distances using the current network infrastructure.

A Storage Area Network (SAN) is part of the overall network of computing assets in an organization, joining various types of storage mechanisms with servers for its various users. SAN allows remote storage devices to attach to servers in such a way that it makes it seem as if the storage mechanism is actually attached to the local operating system itself.

Network Attached Storage (NAS)is a server that is committed solely to file sharing. Unlike SAN, NAS uses file based protocols, making it very clear that the storage device is not attached to the system but is rather operating remotely. This is useful in that the NAS device operates irrespective of the network server and can be located anywhere in the local area network, and not solely within the server. NAS allows for your organization’s storage space to be expanded without adversely affecting any of your employees with maintenance shutdowns and upgrades.
